USB-C Port and Notch Replacement

Key updates showcased include the switch from the Lightning port to USB-C and the replacement of the notch found on the iPhone 14 with the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 15.

Notably, design variations such as more pronounced curves at the edges and the incorporation of a titanium frame are anticipated exclusively in the iPhone 15 Pro models. Nevertheless, leaked renders have hinted at a subtle adjustment to the display size.

Potential Display Evolution

Derived from CAD drawings of the iPhone 15, renders by 9to5Mac hint at a minor expansion in display size.

The suggested size increase, from 6.1 inches to 6.2 inches, is projected based on the available information.

Despite these speculations, the core design and camera arrangement remain largely unchanged, with Apple continuing the use of the existing body structure.

Refinements for the iPhone 15 Plus

Visualizations of the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus indicate subtle refinements compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Plus. These adjustments comprise the incorporation of the Dynamic Island and slight tweaks to the device’s size and thickness.

Enhanced Button Placement and Functionality

iPhone 15

The iPhone 15 Pro case leaks suggest modest repositioning of the power and volume buttons, slightly lowering their placement in comparison to the iPhone 14 Pro models.

The case cutout at the base has been enlarged to accommodate the USB-C port. The upcoming iPhones will also feature the new “Action” button to replace the mute switch.

This button will serve multiple functions such as activating Shortcuts, enabling camera access, flashlight control, silent mode activation, and more.

USB-C Transition for Regulatory Compliance

Apple’s decision to transition from the Lightning port to a USB-C port is in response to new regulations imposed in Europe.

These regulations mandate USB-C ports in iPhones sold within the European market. As a result, Apple is compelled to either revise its global design or develop dedicated European versions of its iPhones.

Shift in Charging Speeds and Data Transfers

The iPhone 15 Pro models equipped with USB-C ports are expected to support accelerated data transfers.

While standard iPhone 15 models will retain USB 2.0 speeds (identical to Lightning), the Pro variants might enjoy faster USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 speeds.

This upgrade could enable swifter video and file transfers, significantly boosting efficiency. Should Thunderbolt 3 compatibility be included, data transfer speeds could soar up to 40Gb/s.

Wireless Charging Advances

Both MagSafe charging and the new Qi2 standard will be supported by the iPhone 15 models.

This innovation enables 15W charging from non-MagSafe third-party accessories, ensuring rapid wireless charging even from accessories not officially integrated with MagSafe.

Revamped Camera Capabilities

iPhone 15

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will adopt a 48-megapixel camera, a feature introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models.

The enhanced stacked sensor design promises superior low-light photography performance.

Furthermore, rumours suggest the standard iPhone 15 models may also benefit from the 48-megapixel lens.

Periscope Lens Exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro Max

iPhone 15

Limited to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, periscope lens technology will significantly elevate optical zoom capabilities. Offering 5x or even 10x optical zoom, this technology outperforms standard telephoto lenses.

The periscope lens employs an angled mirror to direct light towards the image sensor, enabling advanced optical zoom without digital zoom artefacts.

Qualcomm Modem Chips

Apple’s reliance on Qualcomm’s 5G modem chips will persist in the 2023 iPhone 15 lineup. Qualcomm’s X70 chip, offering AI enhancements, better coverage, improved signal, and energy efficiency, will power all iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models.

iPhone 15 Repairability

Repairability enhancements will make iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models easier to repair. The simplified chassis design will enable the removal and replacement of back glass, ultimately leading to reduced repair costs.

iPhone 15 Price Range

The iPhone 15 Pro models could see a price increase, with predictions suggesting that the iPhone 15 Pro might start at $1,099 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max at $1,199.

The standard iPhone 15 models, however, are expected to maintain their current pricing, with the entry-level iPhone 15 model starting at $799.
