The Samsung Galaxy A54 Review: The Best Budget Phone Now

Introducing the Samsung Galaxy A54, a new addition to the brand’s improving lineup of midrange phones. In the past year, Samsung and Google competed fiercely, aiming to create the best budget smartphone under $500.

The Galaxy A54 makes a strong claim to this title. It takes the good parts from last year’s Galaxy A53 and adds more — a brighter screen, longer battery life, and a better main camera.

The upcoming Google Pixel 7a has a challenge ahead if it wants to beat the Galaxy A54 in the budget category.

In this review of the Samsung Galaxy A54, we’ll explore its features and why it’s a great Android phone if you’re looking for something under $500.

Price of the Samsung Galaxy A54

The Galaxy A54 is currently priced at $449/£449/AU$699. This price gets you a phone with 128GB storage and 6GB RAM, and you can add more storage with a microSD card.

In the U.K., the base model has 2GB extra RAM, and for £50 more, you can get 256GB storage. Keep an eye out for discounts from Samsung, carriers, and retailers to find good deals on the Galaxy A54.

At $350 less than the Galaxy S23, the Galaxy A54 is a great option for those who don’t need all the fancy features of Samsung’s flagship. It’s priced similarly to the Google Pixel 6a, while the rumored Pixel 7a might be $50 more expensive. The iPhone SE (2022) starts at $429.

Design of the Samsung Galaxy A54

Samsung Galaxy A54

The Galaxy A54 follows a similar design to Samsung’s flagship phones, which is a good thing. It has three camera lenses on the back, arranged in a descending pattern, like the recent Galaxy S23 models.

The lenses stick out a bit, which causes a slight wobble when the phone is placed on a surface.

The Galaxy A54 uses less expensive materials. The back is made of plastic, and it uses Gorilla Glass 5 instead of the stronger Gorilla Glass Victus 2 found in the Galaxy S23. It’s water-resistant up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, though not as much as the Galaxy S23.

The Awesome Violet version has a purple hue on the back and sides. Other options include graphite, white, and lime.

The Galaxy A54’s fingerprint reader is under the display. I had some minor issues during setup, which is rare for me. Eventually, it recognized my fingerprint, and unlocking the phone was easy afterward.

Display of the Samsung Galaxy A54

The Galaxy A54 has a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen, a bit bigger than the Galaxy S23 but smaller than the S23 Plus. It can go up to a smooth 120Hz refresh rate for better scrolling and graphics.

Unlike the fixed 120Hz refresh rate of last year’s Galaxy A53, the Galaxy A54’s rate can adapt and go up to 120Hz. This is a big step forward, making it stand out against the Pixel 6a and iPhone SE, both with fixed 60Hz screens.

Compared to these phones, the Galaxy A54 has the most vivid colors. It covers a wide range of colors, making videos and visuals pop. The Galaxy A54’s display is brighter than the Pixel 6a’s, which means it’s easier to see outdoors.

Camera of the Samsung Galaxy A54

Midrange phones no longer have bad cameras. To be taken seriously against flagship phones, they need good cameras.

The Galaxy A54 meets this challenge with its 50MP main camera, matching the Galaxy S23’s specs. This is a big deal since the S23 is known for its camera.

The Galaxy A54 also has a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro lens. Let’s focus on the main cameras and compare them to the Pixel 6a and iPhone SE.

Battery Life

Moving on to battery life, the Galaxy A54’s Exynos 1380 manages the 5,000 mAh battery well. With the display set at up to 120Hz, the A54 lasted 10 hours and 20 minutes in our web browsing test.

This is better than most smartphones. Turning off the high refresh rate, it lasted 11 hours and 46 minutes, making it a contender for the best battery life.

Compared to the Galaxy S23, which has a smaller battery and more efficient chipset, the A54 lasted longer. In its price range, the A54 outlasted other phones like the iPhone SE and Pixel 6a.

Charging the Galaxy A54 is good, with the same 25W wired charging as the Galaxy S23. It reached 31% in half an hour with a 20W charger.

With a faster charger, it could reach around 55% in the same time. The OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite charges even faster at 67W.
